This project started in the summer of 1999, when George Wyle phoned me and suggested that the two of us record an album together featuring some of our favorite songs. Although he and I had been playing music together for nearly 25 years, we somehow had never gotten around to making a record—so it was about time.

For most jazz-oriented players such as myself, playing these "standards" usually involves quite a bit of melodic improvisation. George isn't a jazz musician by nature, however, so we had to find ways to keep the tunes interesting for three or four minutes each without relying on improv. George had worked for decades as a professional arranger and musical director, so he knew the formula: Keep the melody in the foreground, and use changes in tempo, key, and texture to keep things interesting. I did my best to follow his method. "When I Fall in Love" and "Autumn Leaves" are among his charts on this disc; mine include "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" and "With My Guitar and You"; "Walking My Baby Back Home" was a collaborative effort. For fun, we added a few originals.

I learned quite a lot about arranging during the writing and recording stages of this project. But even more importantly—and surprisingly—I gleaned invaluable lessons on melody playing. You see, the arrangements we crafted had me carrying the melody for about two thirds of the entire album. That meant I really had to figure out how to make my melody playing as musically charismatic as possible. That's no easy proposition, and one I had never really dealt with head on. Thanks for the lesson, George.

Both of us are delighted by the music we made together, and we hope that you get a few kicks from it. By the way, if you find that our musical styles sounds similar, it's probably because George and I are related. he's my grandfather. —Adam Levy
